Voro: "Valencia CF are a big club and we need to improve next season"

Signing off on his time as caretaker coach, Voro reflected on the 1-0 defeat against Sevilla on LaLiga Matchday 38

After his final game in charge, Valencia CF caretaker coach Voro González talked about the defeat to Sevilla FC and the end of their quest for Europa League football.

The showing from the team
"We came here today knowing that we had to win and wait on other results. Winning here isn't easy; Sevilla are a side with a very good dynamic, who haven't lost since the unscheduled break in the season, and who are in the Champions League because they have a good team and do things very well. We tried to always be in the game; in the first half, despite their dominance, they didn't have many chances, and our idea was to take more risks in the second half. After the goal we went forward, taking more risks at the back, and the dominance in the final minutes didn't result in clear chances -although we could have scored. We are very disappointed, because the three points were fundamental and would have got us into Europe; even though it was difficult, we tried."

The season
Of course, I'm sad and disappointed. Valencia CF should be in Europe -above all in the Champions League. Today we had a game that, if we had won, we would have been there (the Europa League). It's true that, in the end, we could have resolved this earlier. Logically, right now we remember the points that we dropped against Leganés, for example. It's true that when I took charge the dynamic hadn't been good. We tried to change things, and there were good and bad results. But I think that the team tried. In the end it wasn't to be; we didn't have a good season, definitely. The season was a bad one, and disappointing. What we have to do is look to do things well for next season, make the right choice with the coach, and everybody do everything that we can to learn from this, so that next season we can be fighting to get into Europe -and, above all, the Champions League."

How the players approached the game
"The players were motivated. I didn't see any passive attitude. We had a very good team in front of us, who play in a well defined way. Defensively we played correctly; they had more of the ball, but the team loosened up after the goal and we saw a little more anger and character when we were behind. We were always in the game and we tried, but it wasn't to be."

"The fact that Sevilla FC beat us wasn't due to a lack of attitude, but rather because they played better than us. We are where we are because we didn't perform as expected, for whatever reason. I'm not the right person to analyse the entire season."

A bad season
"If Valencia CF finish ninth, then of course it's a disappointing season. We weren't up to the standard of where a team like Valencia CF should be, which is in Europe and fighting for the Champions League spots."

Preparing for next season
"Valencia CF are a big club. We have to improve next year with the new coach and the decisions he makes. That will be with the intention for us to be talking about the team having achieved our objectives at the end of the season: Being in Europe and fighting to play in the Champions League."
"The solution is improving next season. There's no other option."
