Carlos Corberán: “We are eager to give the fans the three points”
Valencia CF head coach press conference ahead of the match against RCD Mallorca
The 1963/64 edition of the Copa del Rey was somethng of an anomaly for Valencia CF, as for the only time in their history the first team met the second team in the competition. The team then known as C.D. Mestalla would make it through to the Round of 32, having beaten C.D. Europa 4-3 o aggregate in the First Round, and were paired against the senior squad in an unprecedented encounter.
The first game was played on May 1st, with sections of Valencianistas not wishing to attend due to divided loyalties. Valencia CF won 2-0 through goals from Héctor Núñez and Guillot, scored in the 23rd and 25th minutes, respectively.

The match served as a warmup for the Fairs Cup semifinal that awaited Valencia CF in Cologne, with the return leg of the Copa also taking place at Mestalla, on May 9th.
Coach Mundo decided to field a team with only three regular starters for their second game against CD Mestalla, but it proved sufficient for a resounding 0-5 win thanks to strikes from Mañó (30’), Cabello (47’), Ficha (63’), Suco (79’) and Paquito (88’). Valencia CF would make it through to the semifinals before losing out to Atletico Madrid, whilst in the Fairs Cup they made it to the final -losing to Real Zaragoza.
Second teams are now not permitted to enter the cup competition, meaning that the 1964 fixture remains a truly unique event in club history.
