Cillessen's VCF move made with national team in mind
Jasper Cillessen has 50 caps for the Netherlands in both official competition and friendlies, and the new Valencia CF goalkeeper believes that his summer move from FC Barcelona will keep him in the national team picture as first choice shot stopper.
The 30-year-old received news of the offer to come to Mestalla whilst away with his country participating in the UEFA Nations League, and whilst he was focused on the competition at hand, after the Oranje's defeat in the final to Portugal Cillessen consulted coach Ronald Koeman for advice on his future.
Making it clear that Valencia CF were his preferred option, he sat down with the national team coach as they analysed his situation. The chance of regular first team football in LaLiga held much weight, as did Koeman's recommendation of the club -whom he had managed briefly from November 2007 to April 2008- and the city.
Cillessen told VCF Media that "Koeman is very happy with my signing for Valencia CF," and hopes that the move will keep him in the picture for the Euro 2020 competition next June.
