The opening goal was scored 24 minutes in, as Kempes latched onto a long ball down the left and cut inside, beating the goalkeeper with a well placed shot from inside the box.
Real Madrid would have a chance to equalise from the penalty spot when Ricardo Arias was adjudged to have brought down Vitoria, but Wolf hit his strike against the right post.

Valencia CF would double their lead just one minute before the final whistle, with Kempes breaking forward, the goalkeeper blocking his initial effort and the Argentine slotting home the rebound to make it 2-0.

A great celebration followed, with twice the motive for Arias: His daughter Irene was born during the cup final. A huge reception was given to the players in Valencia
