Danjuma scores his first goal as a Valencia CF player against Getafe CF
The Dutch forward made his debut on the scoresheet for Valencia CF and did so against an opponent that had resisted him until now.
Xabier Eskurza, a Valencia CF player in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons, previewed the Copa del Rey semifinal tie against Athletic Club in conversation with VCF Media. Also an ex-Athletic standout, he predicts a close contest between the two teams.
In the two seasons that he spent at Mestalla, Eskurza was part of a side that finished runner-up in LaLiga, and played almost 60 official matches.
Guaranteed excitement
“These games have always had great tension and good football. The format of the Copa del Rey makes it even more attractive and, with it being on the verge of a final, excitement is guaranteed.”
No risks
“The tie is wide open. Athletic Club are in a better dynamic, but we all know what football is like. The two teams are the mirror image of their coaches: Very solid, well organised and dangerous on the counterattack. The fact that the tie is over two legs could mean that in the first match both teams seek to get a good result, but without risking too much.”
The vital role of Mestalla
“The away goals rule has been scrapped, and that means that Valencia CF can be calmer about the second leg being at home. However, it also means that Athletic Club don’t have to play the first match with the pressure of not being able to concede goals. Regardless, both coaches are looking for solidity and both teams are going to try to take advantage of their opportunities. We are going to see everything settled in Valencia. That is where it will have to be decided.”
The importance of the first leg
“Valencia CF will try to get out of the first leg ‘alive’, whilst Athletic Club -albeit maintaining their block- will seek to do the opposite, relying on the push from San Mamés. Athletic Club will try to get a goal that allows them to go to Valencia with some peace of mind and with the option of being able to go on the counterattack.”
Soler's leadership qualities
“Valencia CF have important players. Soler can carry the weight of the team, due to his quality and his position. The centre backs can also do that, due to the profile of the team.”
