Gameiro: "We have three strikers here with different qualities"
Kevin Gameiro's goalscoring exploits this summer are a promising sign for Valencia CF, and the striker hopes that they will carry over into the new season. The Frenchman talked to VCF Media after hitting the net twice in the friendly against Bayer Leverkusen, and explained how his goals are helping everyone to gain confidence.
"It's important for confidence -for me and for my teammates. All three strikers have been scoring goals, and we're going to continue like this. We are preparing well in order to start the season strongly," he said, before adding that the competition for a starting spot up top will work in the team's favour.
"We have three strikers here with different qualities. I think that we can all play together. We will try to continue scoring goals in the last preseason game, and keep scoring goals this coming season. Maxi Gómez has scored a goal already and has integrated well with us. I think that it's easy to settle into this group. We'll try to help him on the pitch and in the group."
One of Gameiro's Sunday strikes was from a penalty, and whilst he is aware of the pecking order for set pieces, he is not averse to taking more spot kicks if required.
"Dani (Parejo) is the first choice penalty taker. If I can take some this year then it's good for me, but we talk about it and leave penalties for each other to help with confidence. The other day Rodrigo took one, Dani has taken one in preseason, and I took one today. We're a group and we talk a lot to make sure that we are OK. Dani left this one for me, so I thank him for that."
For now, the French star is looking forward to starting the season, and believes that Valencia CF will be ready from the get-go.
"I think that we can still improve many things. We are going to work on them. We still have two weeks until the start of the season. We will carry on working and we know what we have to do to perform well. I think that the team are in good shape in terms of our fitness," he said following the penultimate preseason test.
