Gómez gunning for goals in regional derby

Maxi Gómez used the international break to continue his goalscoring form, this time representing his country. The striker found the net in Uruguay's match against Chile, handing them their first victory of the 2022 World Cup qualifying stage.

For Valencia CF, Gómez has hit the ground running, and he already has three goals to his name. Joint-top scorer in LaLiga, level with Ansu Fati (FC Barcelona), José Luis Morales (Levante UD), Iago Aspas (RC Celta), Gerard Moreno and Paco Alcácer (Villarreal CF), he is hoping to be on target again this weekend in the regional derby.

A preseason friendly this summer saw the Uruguayan score a brace against Villarreal CF, standing him in good stead for Sunday's 4pm CEST kickoff.

He has a previous scoring record against 'The Yellow Submarine' as well: In three of the last four games he has played against them, he has played a part in goals: In 2018/29 he was on the mark both home and away, as well as providing an assist in Valencia CF's 2-1 win at Mestalla last November.
