Limited Supercopa precedents for Celades and Cillessen
Valencia CF head to Saudi Arabia on Monday in preparation for the Spanish Supercopa, in what will be a journey with plenty of new experiences for the squad. It is the first time that the cup has been held in the Western Asian country, as well as the first time for the revamped 'Final Four' format, which will see the club play Real Madrid and then, should they progress, the final against Atletico Madrid or FC Barcelona.
Cillessen and Celades have previous Supercopa experience
Amongst the players, only one has previously played in the Spanish Supercopa. Goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen won the trophy in 2018, as an unused substitute in FC Barcelona's game against Sevilla in Tangier.
Ironically enough, Cillessen was a Barça player when Valencia CF beat them in the final of the Copa del Rey in May of 2019, earning qualification for the Supercopa.
Coach Albert Celades also has the Spanish Supercopa on his CV, from his playing career. He was part of the winning side for FC Barcelona in 1996, albeit not featuring in a single minute over the two-legged tie, then played 2 minutes in Real Madrid's 2001 win.
Valencia CF players will have a starring role in the 2020 edition of the competition, as they look to win their first trophy of the year.
