On A Day Like Today: Valencia CF's second LaLiga title
On this day in 1944, Valencia CF became LaLiga champions for the second time in their history. They clinched the title with a 2-1 win over CE Sabadell at Mestalla, rounding off their 25th season of existence.
In the match, Mundo was the scorer of both goals, and was the club's top marksman of the campaign with 27. Valencia CF ended the season with 40 points, ahead of second placed Atletico Aviación.
The team featured several legendary names in club history, such as the 'Delantera Eléctrica' forward line of Mundo, Epi, Amadeo, Asensi and Gorostiza, goalkeeper Eizaguirre and captain Juan Ramón.
That year, Valencia CF enjoyed a spectacular start to the season, losing just two games between September and February (against FC Barcelona and Athletic Club). They would move top of the table on Matchday 4, and would not relinquish the lead from then on.
A record of 40 points, 73 goals scored and just 32 conceded made Valencia CF worthy champions. The title win built on their league success from 1942, and they would finish runners-up in the Copa in the 1944 season as well. On A Day Like Today, they confirmed their second LaLiga honour.
