Valencia CF's Supercopa history

The Spanish Supercopa debuts a new 'Final Four' format in 2020, with an extra two teams entering the equation besides the LaLiga champions and the Copa del Rey winners. However, participation is nothing new for Valencia CF, who have contested the competition on four occasions since it came into existence in 1982.

1999: Winners
After lifting the Copa del Rey in Seville in 1999, Valencia CF took on league champions Barcelona in the Supercopa. In a two-legged tie, VCF were victorious at Mestalla 1-0 in the first encounter, with a goal scored by Claudio López. In the return fixture, an epic 3-3 draw at the Camp Nou saw Albelda, Juan Sánchez and Farinós all on the scoresheet, responding to an opener scored by Kluivert. The Supercopa win meant that Valencia CF would earn the only domestic silverware missing from their trophy cabinet.

2002: Runners-up
As 2001/02 LaLiga champions, Valencia CF faced Deportivo La Coruña -who had earned the Copa del Rey that season. A 3-0 defeat in the first leg made it an uphill battle for the team, with the adversity increasing at Mestalla when Roberto Ayala was sent off 2 minutes into the return game. Depor won 0-1 in that encounter, to deny Valencia CF the cup.

2004: Runners-up
Two years later, and with the 2003/04 title under their belts, Valencia CF met Real Zaragoza in the Supercopa. A 0-1 win in the opening encounter, thanks to a goal from Vicente, was not enough to ensure the trophy, as 'Los Maños' would respond with a 1-3 victory at Mestalla.

2008: Runners-up
Valencia CF entered the 2008 Supercopa as Copa del Rey winners, taking on LaLiga champions Real Madrid. A high scoring 3-2 win at Mestalla, through strikes from Mata, Villa and Vicente, put VCF at an advantage, but when the two teams collided at the Santiago Bernabeu they would fall 4-2. Twelve years on, these two teams cross paths again in the semifinals of the new-look Supercopa.

Besides these three participations in the Spanish Supercopa, Valencia CF also took part in various predecessors recognised by the RFEF, such as the Copa Presidente FEF and Copa Eva Duarte. In 1949, Valencia CF won the latter 7-4 against FC Barcelona after extra time.
