The team drop three points at Mestalla
Valencia CF lost 0-3 to Atletico Madrid on Matchday 25 of the LALIGA EA Sports season, in a game played at Mestalla. Julián Álvarez scored two goals for the visitors in the first half, and in the second period Valencia CF's rally was not enough -and a third goal from Ángel Correa rounded off the defeat.
The first half saw Álvarez make the score 0-1 off a rebound, as former ValenciaCF player Samuel Lino hit the crossbar with the initial attempt.
Minutes later, the Argentine forward would head in to make it 0-2, half an hour into the game.
The clearest chance for Valencia CF in the first half would come in the 36th minute, with a header from Umar Sadiq. His shot went just wide.
Atletico Madrid could have scored a third in a one-on-one with Mamardashvili after a counterattack, but Álvarez' effort went wide.
After the break, Valencia CF had their best minutes, with greater speed and fluidity in the construction of their attacks. They also moved further upfield and closer to the final third.
Gayà put in two dangerous crosses from the left: One finished by Hugo Duro in the six-yard box just wide and the other pushed away by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, leading to a very dangerous shot by Enzo Barrenechea.
In the final stretch, a controversial move would come. Sadiq headed a ball that clearly hit the hand of defender Javi Galán, but the referee did not award a penalty despite the protests.
In the final minutes, Correa would make it 0-3 off a counterattack.
Valencia CF will seek to return to winning ways next Sunday against CA Osasuna.
