A late goal from Atlhetic Club knocks the team out of the cup
Valencia CF bowed out of the Copa del Rey with a 1-2 loss to Athletic Club, as a late goal from the visitors handed Carlos Corberán's men defeat.
During the opening minutes, Valencia CF dominated the game and created several chances on goal.
Rioja created the first real scoring opportunity for Valencia CF after a clever first touch, a run into the opposition penalty area, and a shot that was saved by Athletic Club goalkeeper Padilla.
In the 24th minute, Dimitrievski had to intervene to send a powerful shot from Robert Navarro out for a corner.
Athletic Club took the lead with an own goal by Sadiq, who tried to clear a free kick from Navarro at the near post and knocked the ball into his own net.
Moments later, Sadiq had a brilliant chance to level off a great cross from Rioja, but could not find the target.
The Nigerian striker was more clinical from his next opportunity, after a mistake by Padilla in collecting a cross from Rioja. He finished off to make it 1-1.
Valencia CF continued to push, and came close to scoring a second goal with moves by Danjuma and Pepelu, but the first half ended all-square.
SECOND HALF
After the break, Athletic Club had a very dangerous chance, which Robert Navarro fired wide. Valencia CF responded with a shot from Pepelu from outside the box, but it also went astray.
Shortly after, Valencia CF threatened again with a shot from Sadiq inside the area, but it too missed the target. Corberán decided to make changes, and Hugo Duro and Tárrega entered the field of play.
In the following minutes, Athletic Club launched several attacks. However, Valencia CF themselves came very close to taking the lead with a well-worked move involving Rioja, Beltrán, and Foulquier, which ended with the full-back's shot striking the postl.
In the 74th minute, after a VAR review, García Verdura awarded a penalty for a foul in the box, following a clearance by Tárrega. From the spot kick, Dimitrievski made a great save to keep his team in the game.
Ramazani and Diego López came on late in the contest. Five minutes from the end of regulation time, the former went through on goal, but was hauled down -with no red card shown or foul given against the Athletic Club player who brought him back.
With extra time looming, Athletic Club broke Valencia CF hearts in the 96th minute, as Iñaki Williams scored from inside the area to give the visitors the win and a place in the semifinals.
Valencia CF host Real Madrid CF at Mestalla in LaLiga on Sunday.
