Corberán: “We’re going to look for solutions to change the dynamic”

The Valencia CF coach’s post-match press conference.

Valencia CF coach Carlos Corberán spoke to the media after the defeat against FC Barcelona at Mestalla.

Analysis of the game

We played against opponents who were superior to us, I'd say from start to finish, and the result reflects that. Conceding a goal so early, from their first or second attack, made everything much more difficult. After that, the chances we had after that goal, on transitions, quick attacks, to balance the game or level after going down 0-2, to have been able to score a goal that would change the team's momentum, were important. We failed to capitalise on those opportunities in quick attacks or transitions, and the opponents found a way to become a team that overwhelmed us, that were superior to us, and I think that after the third goal, it was very difficult to turn the game around.

A complicated situation

It's a situation that has affected us all, but it's not one that has left us dejected. It's a difficult situation that we will navigate together, that we will look at with great sincerity and honesty, and as a team we will seek solutions to turn this situation around. It's a difficult moment, a moment of disappointment, in which we accept any kind of criticism directed at us -especially me as the coach, because the fans start the season with a very high level of enthusiasm, and I, as the coach, haven't been able to give our team that same enthusiasm or the level of performance we want to give our fans. Therefore, it's a difficult moment, a tough moment that we must go through together, seeking solutions to change the current dynamic.

Conviction

Since I took this job, I've always had strength, conviction, and a sense of responsibility. We all have the responsibility to turn around a situation that started out more difficult than last year, but which we must face in the same way we've faced difficult times before: with unity, conviction, and responsibility, to turn this situation around.

Unity

I haven't seen a lack of effort from the players. What I have seen is that what FC Barcelona proposed surpassed what we proposed. In the end, the solution lies with everyone involved: the team, which includes the staff and the squad, and the club or board. We are all responsible for what we are experiencing, and we are all the people who can change reality and who must work to change the reality of Valencia CF. And it is with this commitment and responsibility that we face this moment.

Talks with Kiat Lim

The conversations I've had with Kiat have always been honest and sincere. I've always shared my feelings, needs, solutions, and concerns with him.

Solutions

I think the solution is that it's time to find that solution. It's time to get through this period as a team. I don't think there's any doubt about it. In the end, when I talk to the players, I don't talk about anything that isn't related to football; we understand the game.

It's a difficult time for them, a time when accumulating negative results leads to a loss of confidence in their abilities and can cause them to underperform.

But I think that in football, confidence is closely linked to performance, and therefore to results. You have to have confidence to achieve results. Ultimately, we're underperforming. I've seen the team perform better than this, and I, as the person ultimately responsible, along with the squad, will look for solutions to perform at the level we are capable of as a team.
