Match Report: Gayà strike earns win over Getafe CF
The team take all three points from their Matchday 20 encounter
Valencia CF took a much-needed victory against Getafe CF on LaLiga Matchday 20, as a late José Luis Gayà goal earned a 0-1 triumph at the Coliseum in Madrid.
The first ten minutes were characterised by tight, disciplined play, with aerial duels playing a key role in the action. In the 15th minute, Valencia CF had their first real chance of the contest when Pepelu stole the ball on the edge of the Getafe penalty area and passed to Luis Rioja. He in turn found Ugrinic, whose cross to the penalty spot was intercepted by the defence.
From the 20th minute onwards, the game opened up, and both teams increased their opportunities. But there was also a setback for Valencia CF, as César Tárrega twisted is knee when clearing a long ball and had to be substituted minutes later. Santamaria came on in his place, and Pepelu moved to the right side of the centre back partnership.
With four minutes remaining in the first half, Ugrinic unleashed a powerful shot from outside the Getafe CF area, but it missed the target.
SECOND HALF
The second half began much like the first: with both teams trying to gain control of possession. Arnaut Danjuma created a dangerous chance, breaking into the box, but his shot struck the right side-netting Shortly afterward, coach Carlos Corberán brought on Umar Sadiq and Diego López.
In the 76th minute, Valencia CF again threatened, with a shot from Sadiq, but it failed to beat David Soria. Moments later, López nearly opened the scoring with an effort from inside the penalty area, but Rico made the block for Getafe.
Valencia CF continued to create chances, and finally their patience and hard work paid off. Santamaría passed to Ugrinic, who spotted Gayà unmarked in the box and picked him out with a cross. The captain finished off the move perfectly, chipping the ball over David Soria to put the team ahead.
After holding firm defensively in the final stages, Valencia CF secured an important victory. Next, they host RCD Espanyol at Mestalla on Saturday, January 24th.
