The Nou Mestalla will be a leading stadium in environmental sustainability
The design, by Fenwick Iribarren Architects, follows the principles of ‘green architecture’
Starting in the summer of 2027, the Nou Mestalla will become the new home of Valencia CF and the Valencian fanbase. It has been conceived as a benchmark stadium in terms of environmental sustainability. From its inauguration, it will comply with the ‘UEFA Sustainable Infrastructure Guidelines’ and will be a building fully integrated with and respectful of its surroundings.
Designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects following the principles of ‘green architecture’, the Nou Mestalla will adopt an environmentally conscious and committed architectural approach, aimed at minimizing its environmental impact through efficient energy management, responsible use of materials, and sustainable space development.
ENERGY SAVING SYSTEMS
In the development of the project, both active and passive measures have been taken to promote energy savings. Among the main sustainable solutions is the planned installation of 4 MW power storage batteries, a system that allows energy to be stored and released when needed. This will improve consumption efficiency by managing energy during peak and off-peak hours, help stabilize the power grid, and enable the stadium to continue operating during blackouts or power drops.
Moreover, the stadium will be equipped with widespread high-efficiency lighting systems, including state-of-the-art LED fixtures throughout the building and especially for sports lighting on the pitch.
WATER SAVING SYSTEMS
Water management is another key aspect. In a bid to encourage more responsible use, the Nou Mestalla will not use potable water for irrigating the pitch, which will significantly reduce the carbon footprint, lower energy usage, and simplify maintenance, saving on various resources.
The stadium will also feature a stormwater tank connected to the drainage system of the pitch and roof, allowing rainwater to be treated and reused. Along these lines, the Nou Mestalla will also employ a network of low-consumption systems, enabling savings of thousands of cubic meters of water per year.
FACADE DESIGN
To maximize the use of bioclimatic principles and support long-term sustainability, the building and its pathways have been designed with Valencia’s climate in mind and based on the features of the site, taking into account orientation, sun exposure, prevailing winds, and topography.
The semi-open design and overhangs will result in significant heating and cooling savings in circulation areas, while providing excellent thermal and acoustic insulation in climate-controlled zones. This will enhance temperature control, improve indoor air quality through natural ventilation, and allow for ample natural light.
