Corberán: "Everyone will give everything to turn the situation around"
The coach previews the LaLiga Matchday 12 fixture
Valencia CF coach Carlos Corberán talked ahead of the LaLiga Matchday 12 game against Real Betis at Mestalla
Fears of a negative fan reaction
"The importance of Mestalla is always paramount, and there's no better time to turn things around than in front of our fans, with the desire we have to do it at Mestalla."
Ugrinic's condition
"I already mentioned that when he arrived, his fitness was normal; in fact, he'd been competing, playing two games in the Swiss league. The discomfort started in the second week and increased until the game against Girona. It's a typical patellar tendon injury that he has, and I said we'd be looking at 10 days, following the medical staff's timeline for a series of treatments. He's currently working with the rehabilitation specialists and adapting to the training load and the movements that are specific to playing, and he'll rejoin the group soon. We hope that the pain and swelling aren't as severe then, and that it allows him to handle it."
Why the team are low down the division
"First of all, we understand the fans' frustration. It hurts us all not to be able to give them what we believe they deserve. The solution is for the team, players, staff... everyone, to give their all to turn the situation around. We did it before and we'll do it again."
What has changed in the team this season
"Every season is different and a new challenge. This season is a new sporting challenge. We've put together a team with a different group of people, albeit with the same base but with players who have left and come in. We're in a demanding situation, and we're facing it with unity, commitment, and the same desire as last season."
Players out of the squad
We have the same situation as last weekend
Betis' good scoring form
"We're focusing on our capabilities, but also analyse our opposition always. They have resources and a large squad, and they're showing they can compete well in Europe and in LaLiga. That's the challenge we have ahead of us, and we have the utmost conviction and responsibility."
Struggling to find an identity
"The identity we're building can't depend on who starts games. Sometimes you have a very clear idea; sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't, and that's also because of the opposition. I see the same intention, courage, and personality, and the same desire to adjust what we need to do."
Developing mental strength
"When you don't get the dynamic of results that you want, you take setbacks as challenges to what you want to achieve. There's no other way than persistence, and that's how any setback in life and in football is overcome. You need a lot of mental strength and confidence in your abilities to turn around a dynamic."
If he doubts himself
"We always analyse every match. Before each game, we assess how to play to be as competitive as possible. We also analyse it afterward; it's an exercise we do continuously. In this demanding situation, it requires extra energy, personality, courage, and strength. There's no room for doubt, only for that extra boost that makes us change things. When we all give this bit extra, we will manage to change things."
Not changing the starting XI
"We've got a good enough squad to be competitive, regardless of who plays. Then there are different circumstances that mean there is more consistency or less in terms of my lineups."
Betis' recent improvements
"They're doing things very well, the results show it. They're having a good Europa League campaign and are still in a good position in LaLiga, and got to a final last season. We're focused on being the best possible Valencia CF side."
Adjusting to a new style
"Mobility can be essential for a certain style of play, but what I am certain of is that pressing after losing possession depends on how you lose the ball. When you lose possession over long distances, it's more difficult to exert pressure. The way you attack affects the way you defend. Each playing style involves different aspects of play, and we work towards that. We want to be a brave and daring team."
Changes in the club's structure
"Ron Gourlay gave a press conference with you. I understand why you ask me, but I'm focused on the game, which is very important for us and for our fans. We want to do the best job possible at Mestalla, and all of our attention is on that."
