Valencia CF to face CD Castellón in the 2025/26 preseason
The match will take place on July 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Estadi Antonio Puchades in the Ciutat Esportiva de Paterna
On June 9th, 1999, Valencia CF took a stunning 6-0 win over Real Madrid at Mestalla -their biggest ever victory over the Spanish giants. The game was the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal, eventually won by the club in Seville.
Valencia CF came into the contest occupying sixth place in LaLiga, with one matchday remaining and them still in with a chance of Champions League qualification. Their focus was on the cup that summer night over two decades ago, however, and Claudio Ranieri's side would take the lead early against Real Madrid. Claudio López provided the opener with a free kick sent underneath the wall.
Six minutes later, Madrid went down to ten men with the sending off of Fernando Redondo. From there, it was one-way traffic in Valencia CF's favour, and before half time Alain Roche had scored twice and Vlaovic had turned in a rebound from another López set piece.
Upon the restart, Valencia CF searched for further goals. Miguel Angel Angulo made it 5-0 on 63 minutes, and whilst Vlaovic would be sent off, his side still had another goal in them: Gaizka Mendieta rounded off the scoring on a momentous night.
It remains the most comprehensive VCF victory against Real Madrid, and the visitors' heaviest defeat in cup competition. The return leg ended 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, and Valencia CF went on to triumph against Atletico Madrid in the final to lift the Copa del Rey.
