One year ago, Gonçalo Guedes was lifting the inaugural UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal. Not only that, but the Valencia CF star was the scorer of the late goal against the Netherlands that gave his country the victory in Lisbon. It was the perfect end to a season that had seen him win domestic honours with his club, thanks to their Copa del Rey victory at the Benito Villamarín in Seville.
“It was a very important moment for me. When you're playing for your country it's always a great source of pride. The feeling is indescribable. Being able to help the team and score a goal, amidst the wonderful atmosphere around Portugal, was huge. It's one of the moments that has made the most impact on me,“ says Guedes of the occasion a year on.
Whilst this time last year the Portuguese was enjoying the celebrations in his homeland and having a brief summer break, in 2020 June is a time for club football. Guedes has been working hard in recent weeks to be prepared for whatever the return of the LaLiga season may bring. He will get a chance to play again this Friday, when Valencia CF take on Levante UD at Mestalla.
