Corberán: “The result wasn’t what we wanted, but we saw how we want to be”

The coach talks after the 1-1 draw with Real Betis

Valencia CF coach Carlos Corberán spoke to the media after his team were held to a 1-1 draw at Mestalla on LaLiga Matchday 12.

INSISTING WITH THE PROCESS

“Today we didn’t get the result we wanted, but in our performance we saw the team we aspire to be. We saw the Valencia CF we want to be in terms of commitment and game management, and without a doubt, this is the path to follow with our mentality, effort, and organisation. Good performances are the prelude to good results. We have to keep working this way and managing matches well, because that’s what will bring us closer to achieving the results we want.”

REACTING TO GOING BEHIND

“Sometimes intensity is about finding advantages to do damage to the opponents. From the start, with Pepelu between the centre backs, the height of José and Thierry, and the positions of Diego and Danjuma, we were able to maintain a good volume in terms of our attacking play, press Betis, attack down the wings, and make runs. We found the way to create goalscoring opportunities. Then, defensively, I saw moments of aggression when we were pushing forward, moments of composure and good defending near the area when we were playing deeper -against a team that, in our opinion, have game-changing players who can create a lot of danger near the box. Overall, the team's mentality was the right one. In the second half, we conceded a goal after a mistake they capitalised on, when we weren't under pressure. What I’ll take away is the reaction, the team's strength, their refusal to accept defeat, their refusal to give up, their push forward, their determination to take the next step. The team fought until the very last minute to secure the three points.”

UNITY

“This dressing room is completely united. When anyone questions our unity, I'm just as surprised about it as the players. The level of commitment from this group, the level of dedication in every training session, couldn't make a coach happier. However, we aren't always able to play well. This group are also very self-critical, very demanding of ourselves. Because of that mentality, I have absolute confidence that we will turn things around. As for the club's support, I feel the same support as I did the day I was presented as Valencia CF coach. I've never felt even a slight reduction in support.”

KEEPING GROWING TOGETHER

“The key is for the team to remember, between now and the next match, what helps us compete, remember what they've done, what the necessary level of intensity is, the composure we need, and that even if we suffer a setback, we can't give up. When you don't get the results you want and you go 1-0 down from an isolated move, it’s very difficult. But neither Mestalla nor the team gave up today. Thanks to the team and Mestalla not giving up, we got the point. A draw is never the result we want, but today Mestalla saw that the team wanted the three points and gave their all to get them. Even though we all leave here disappointed when we don't get the three points, when the fans see the team give their all, commit themselves, and fight, they give us the support we need.”

THE SUPPORT FROM MESTALLA

“We want to give everything to the fans. Today, once again, more than 46,000 people came out and gave us constant support throughout the entire match, even during the difficult moments. For us, this is incredibly important, and that's why we have to keep giving our all. Unfortunately, things aren't always going to go our way -that's just how it is-, but we believe in perseverance. If we can maintain our effort, passion, dedication, and commitment, we're sure that, with this group of players and these amazing fans, we'll turn things around.”

FULL COMMITMENT

“In response to any rumours about my position as coach, I can only say that my commitment to Valencia CF and to turning this situation around is the absolute maximum. I said that yesterday in the press conference. This group, the coaching staff, are going to give our all to turn this situation around, because nothing hurts us more than seeing Valencia CF in a situation we don't want to be in.”

GENEROSITY AND TEAM SPIRIT

“Football is a game of successes and mistakes. I really liked the camaraderie, everyone's generosity, the quick show of support for teammates who lose possession… The team showed an enormous level of generosity in the face of any teammate's mistake. César Tárrega is the player who misplaced that pass, as any player could have, but he's a crucial figure for us, a top-level centre back, and the group know that. I liked seeing the team's reaction, and César’s as well, because it was all about not giving up and going for the result we wanted.”

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

“When the dynamics and results aren't what we want, it creates a context of high expectations. That expectation should motivate you and drive you to do something extra, to not let any mistake go unpunished in a game, and to try to play with the utmost concentration, intensity, personality, and confidence. This group are very aware of the situation. It's painful to see ourselves where we don't want to be, but this is elite football. We play in a great league against great teams, and the key is that we commit in the moment, face it head-on, and bring out the best in ourselves. Only by bringing out the best in ourselves will we be able to change the dynamics of results that we haven't yet managed to change.”
