The coach talks after the draw with Athletic Club
Javier Aguirre spoke to VCF Media after Valencia CF's draw with Athletic Club, on what was his first home game in charge.
LACKING A GOAL IN THE GAME
“We were coming off three consecutive home defeats. We needed to turn things around; we had to do something different. We tried to win the game. Athletic Club were the better side in the first half, and they really put us under pressure. We were the better team in the second half. The ball just wouldn’t go in, but I'm calm about things.”
DEFENSIVE SOLIDITY
“We had conceded a lot of goals before, but today we finally kept a clean sheet. We were coming off three very painful defeats, and we had to avoid dropping so many points at home. We need to turn this place into a fortress. The ball didn’t go in, but I’m happy with the effort from the players and the fans.”
TAKING THINGS STEADILY
“We’ve only had two matches since I took over, and the team are starting to believe in their own potential. I think we're growing.”
HIS FIRST GAME AT MESTALLA
“The support from the fans at Mestalla is unconditional and I'm very happy to have had my first game in charge here."
